Hamilton International Airport Celebrates 75 Years

October 14, 2015 – (Hamilton, Ont.)

Today marks the 75th anniversary of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport which originally opened October 14, 1940.

Built as a wartime air force training station, the Airport now serves as a domestic and international gateway for people and goods movement in the region, is the largest overnight express freight airport in Canada, and is a major contributor to the local and regional economy.

To celebrate this milestone, the Airport will host a free Open House on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

This event will provide an opportunity for the community to gain insight into today’s day-to-day Airport operations and learn more about Hamilton International’s roots in Canadian aviation through a number of interactive activities and displays.

Open House Details:

LOCATION: Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum at Hamilton International Airport

DATE: Saturday, October 24, 2015 (Rain or Shine)

TIME: Open House activities will occur between 10:00am and 3:00pm, The Museum will be open from 9:00am to 5:00pm

COST: Free. Admission to the Warplane Museum and parking costs will be waived for Open House attendees

Open House Highlights include:

  • Runway Tours
    Guests will have the opportunity to take a bus tour and see the Airport’s runways and facilities; tours will be available on a first come, first serve basis, and depart every 45 minutes between 10:15am and 2:00pm.
  • Airport Fire Truck and Operations Vehicle Displays
    See the equipment used to ensure the Airport is open and operational all year long; from snow clearing units to fire trucks, learn about the machinery used to maintain the airfield.
  • Inside Lancaster and DC-3 Aircraft Tours
    You may have seen them from the outside, but have you seen them from the inside? Guests will be able to take a tour inside the Douglas DC-3 Dakota or the Avro Lancaster.
  • History of Aviation
    Learn about the history of aviation through interactive stations hosted by the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum; whether it’s trying your hand at Morse Code or assembling wooden ribs and spars of an aircraft wing, there is something for everyone.
  • 75th Anniversary Grand Prize
    When you arrive don’t forget to fill out a ballot for a chance to win a 75th Anniversary Grand Prize, which includes a flight in the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum’s 1942 Stearman. Contest closes at 3:00pm on Saturday October 24.
