Hamilton International partners with #NotInMyCity to raise awareness about and prevent human trafficking and sexual exploitation

Hamilton, ON (February 22, 2024) — John C. Munro International Airport (Hamilton International) is pleased to announce its official partnership with #NotInMyCity – an anti-human trafficking initiative founded by Canadian humanitarian and country music superstar, Paul Brandt. #NotInMyCity is taking collective action to educate about, prevent, and end human trafficking and sexual exploitation across Canada and Hamilton International is proud to join the group as a Transportation Ally.

“Hamilton International is committed to ensuring our Airport is safe and secure for all who travel through our facility. Becoming a #NotInMyCity Transportation Ally and joining their Yellow Rose campaign is our way of demonstrating our commitment to prevent human trafficking and exploitation activities in our Airport, in the City of Hamilton and the surrounding region,” said Cole Horncastle, Executive Managing Director, Hamilton International.

Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada and 93% of reported victims are Canadians being trafficked within the country. It has been reported that more than a quarter of victims are under the age of 18, that Indigenous Canadians represent half of all human trafficking victims despite being only four per cent of Canada’s population, and that 75% of people working Canada’s sex trade were exploited as a child.

“Welcoming Hamilton International as a transportation ally will help make a positive impact in combatting human trafficking in Canada, a crime which impacts girls and women,” said Paul Brandt, founder of #NotInMyCIty. “I’d like to extend my deep gratitude to the Hamilton International team for their ongoing work to help shine a light on human trafficking and sexual exploitation.”

As a Transportation Ally, Hamilton International has implemented a mandatory e-learning program for its employees to educate and increase awareness about human trafficking, signs to look for and what to do if they suspect trafficking. The Airport is proud to report more than 90% of its current staff have completed the #NotInMyCity training, with a goal for 100% completion in 2024. Hamilton International has also committed to supporting education and awareness about the issue amongst Airport partners, volunteers, and passengers, including participating in joint social media campaigns, posting informational signage and materials in the Airport that display the #NotInMyCity yellow rose symbol, signifying that Hamilton International is a safe place and an ally against human trafficking and exploitation.

Becoming a #NotInMyCity Transportation Ally builds on Hamilton International’s recently announced partnership with Crime Stoppers of Hamilton and Hamilton Police Service on the Crime Doesn’t Fly Here campaign, which educates Airport employees, partners and passengers on how to identify potential forms of criminal activity and their options for reporting anything they believe may be criminal in nature.
