$8M Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Investment for Cargo Development at Hamilton International Airport

Today, the federal and Ontario governments joined with Hamilton’s municipal government and TradePort International Corporation to announce a $12M infrastructure investment for cargo development at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, the third largest cargo airport in Canada.
This investment will develop on-site infrastructure to expand cargo operations at the Airport, creating jobs and driving economic development for the City of Hamilton and greater region.
John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and its partners are responsible for over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs and over $21 million in federal and provincial taxes each year.
It is estimated that this project will add 50 immediate jobs through the infrastructure development phase, and once construction has been completed it is expected over 400 jobs will be generated through direct and indirect economic activity.
Present at today’s announcement were Minister Lisa Raitt, MP Dean Allison, Minister Bob Chiarelli, Minister Ted McMeekin and Mayor Bob Bratina.
The Airport has been working diligently for the past three years to develop on-site cargo infrastructure. A lead role in securing funding was played by Dean Allison and Minister Ted McMeekin along with all-party support from Ministers Diane Finley, Lisa Raitt, Rob Nicholson, Denis Lebel, Bob Chiarelli; MPs Phil McColeman, Mike Wallace, David Sweet, David Christopherson, Chris Charlton, Wayne Marston; MPP Tim Hudak; Hamilton Mayor and all members of City Council.
Frank Scremin, President and CEO of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport explained the impact of this investment to Hamilton; “I am thrilled with today’s announcement for John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. We are very proud to have one of the strongest domestic distribution networks in Canada and introducing a new facility will allow us to expand upon the variety of goods that can be moved through Hamilton International.”
A total of $4M was contributed by each of the federal and Ontario governments, and an additional $4M will be provided by TradePort International Corporation, the private company responsible for management of Hamilton International Airport.
Funds will be used to develop a $12M cargo cross-dock facility providing air/truck intermodal capacity for movement of goods between aircraft and vehicle, temperature control facilities for perishable and pharmaceutical goods, as well as separate and common use facilities.
